Recipe: Aunt Martha’s Five Favorite Flavor Cookies

My aunt Martha was an awesome human. She had lived an eventful life, gave wonderful advice and helped me keep my ish together as a kid.

When she passed a few years back, I received a cookbook from her home. It was her 1938 copy of Searchlight Recipes cookbook. It was originally published in 1931 and a note inside revealed that my great grandmother had helped test some recipes included in the book.

Tucked inside the cover, I also found an original, handwritten recipe for aunt Martha’s Five Fave Flave Cookies and of course I had to make them.

There is something comforting about a handwritten recipe, especially from a loved one that has passed on.

Aunt Martha’s Five Fave Flaves Cookies

A blend of five flavors that you would think are too much for one cookie, but work really well together.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 TBSP vanila
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 2 cups oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup nuts, I used walnuts
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips, chopped (mini chips would be best here)
  • 1/2 cup raisins or dates, I used dried cherries that I chopped into small bits because I have a bunch and wasn’t about to buy more dried fruit.
  • 1/2 cup coconut flakes

Let’s bake!

  1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugars.
  2. Add vanilla, eggs and applesauce, mix.
  3. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and nutmeg, stir into butter and sugar mixture.
  4. Mix in oatmeal, nuts, chocolate chips, raisins and coconut. You can leave out raisins or coconut if you don’t like them or substitute them for something else.
  5. Spoon onto parchment lined baking sheets by the tablespoonful and bake at 350 for 12-14 minutes. I pulled mine at 12 minuets and let them solidify as they cooled. Makes about 4 dozen.
